With Woman: a thank you

The International Day of the Midwife is May 5th. As part of reclaiming the role and title of Midwife in our society, I wrote this to honour those who are with woman: those who serve women in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

With Woman: a thank you.

To those who serve birthing women,
I thank you.

Regardless of your age or where you live in the world,
I honour you

For those wise ones who sit with women and know they don’t have to “do” anything to make birth safe,
I am grateful to you.

Regardless of your title or what you are ‘allowed’ to call yourself,
I recognize your skill and experience.

To those who support mothers regardless of their age, special scars, remote location, number of babies…,
Thank you.  You are needed now more than ever.

For those who recognize birth as an intense and sacred life transformation for mother/baby,
Bless you.

To those who respect and protect a woman’s right to birth as she chooses,
I am humbled by you.

I recognize your contribution to healthy mothers, babies and families,
We are all indebted to you.

I see those of you who are unseen and do not seek credit,
I can’t speak for you but I can acknowledge you.

For your unwavering support of mothers,
I celebrate you.

To the women of the world who are with woman:
Blessings to you in honour of the International Day of the Midwife
and every day for who you are and what you do.
